Emotions & Motivation
The Role of Emotions
Modern rationalism and the assertion of some moral doctrine and politically correct standards have all but vilified the natural human reaction of expressing emotions. These forces however, as well intentioned as they
might be to stop harmful behavior, have done much to drive the authentic expression of emotion underground or into the realm of pretense. Such conditions, while in some cases making the very worst of overt hostile or intimidating behavior less frequent, may have the unintended effect of causing us to repress out productivity and enthusiasm as unintended side effects. When acting professionally is unsupportive of expressing authentically and hence being fully accountable, then trust and teamwork erodes because of the corrosive effect of unstated truth and the emotion that propels it.
Authentic Emotions vs. Strategic Emotions
Ever run into the boss who always asserts anger and sends out vibes of intimidation? Perhaps this person has learned that by showing intense, come-on-strong attitudes is a successful motivator? Yet, it is also quite common to find someone who is so sickenly sweet and nice that their requests are dripping with manipulation. In both cases, these people might not be phony, but they learned that showing one set of emotions to another person gets the job done. By definition, these are strategic emotions. Another way we speak of strategic emotion is secondary emotion. Where primary emotions are the sincere and initial reactions that a person experiences within themselves but might not feel the safety to express.
The No Fault Communication™ method helps team members
When a member of a work group address the emotions and issues in a completely authentic but managed way as to locate
the source issues held by the parties. It is quite common, that each person's has, as a result of their positive intentions to avoid duplicating some previously negative experience, learned to withhold or express a strategic set of words or behaviors and emotions. This situation creates an enormous amount of pressure in the environment.
Physics of Emotion©
The process of understanding the interplay between, meaning, personal truth, emotion and how those steer the format of a given communication is what I call the Physics of Emotion©. Emotions, primarily love, joy, curiosity, enthusiasm, hope, appreciation and competancy; are the forces within human beings that make them creators and not automatons. The emotions of fear, shame, guilt, anger, hopelessness, helplessness, and powerlessness, shrink a person's worth, faith, self-esteem, sense of belonging and significance to the team; all of which detract from the accuracy of communication. The No Fault Communication™ approach seeks to elucidate and elaborate on the subtle but profoundly powerful real workings in communication.
Motivation to act or resist?
What motivates? This is an age old question of employers, teachers, military commanders, coaches and parents alike. Some believe that with just the right incentive or threat a person can be steered into doing just about anything. Yet, what of the cost of that action? The No Fault Communication™ approach assist people in knowing that for themselves and then conveying that to others. Gaining cooperation and getting what one needs and wants is a function of sharing information. To find out more, contact us getgotten@nofaultcommunication.com
